Serengeti National Park is a large park in northern Tanzania that stretches over 14763km2 and it is located in in eastern Mara region and northeastern Simiyu region. Its boarders Ngoro Ngoro in the south and Masai Mara in the north creating the greater Serengeti ecosystem and contains over 1,500,000 hectares of savanna.

It was established in 1940 and well known for the largest annual animal migration in the world of over 1.5 million blue wildebeest and 250,000 zebras along with smaller herds of Thompson’s gazelle and Elands. The park is also a home to the largest lion population in Africa and it is under threat from deforestation population ranching. It is undoubtedly the best-known wildlife sanctuary in the world and is therefore unequaled for its natural beauty and scientific value.

The park was named after the Masai local word Siringet that means an open endless plain and had no elephants in the past until recent Elephants came to the park from neighboring reserves due to population increase and destruction of animal habitants hence ending up in Serengeti national park and its population can only be experienced on Serengeti safaris and tours.

The Serengeti ecosystem is one of the oldest on earth characterized with climate, vegetation and fauna and it consists of three sections i.e.

Seronera Valley: It consists of classic savanna, Acacias and wildlife.

Western corridor: This is marked by Grumeti River, dense bushes and more forests.

North (Labu area): It meets Kenya’s Masai mara reserve and is least visited section.

Accessibility to the park

The park can be accessed using four main entry and exit points i.e. Naabi hill gate, Ndabaka gate, Klein’s gate and Bologonya gate.

By Road: use 4WD safari vehicle from Arusha to Serengeti and overnight stay at one or more wildlife sites en route is usually part of your safari itinerary.

By Air: from Kilimanjaro international airport located between towns of Moshi and Arusha to one of seven airstrips then to Serengeti national park.
